Ever since my mother held me close and opened the pages of my first book I was hooked. Black squiggles and pictures on paper – portals to other, magical worlds! I confess – small piles of semi-read books are all over the house for a snatched moment, or a long sofa nestle. As soon as I finish one, I add more.
They go everywhere with me; waiting rooms, trains, planes, cafés. What’s not to love about the enticing cover artwork, the feel, smell, and heft of books. From the slim and dainty to the seriously weighty.
I think the transfer of mind-clouds of information and ideas and stories between people and to groups over time and distance through books is miraculous! Written words and painted images were a key evolutionary adaptation for our clever, clever species, that kicked off as early as 32,000 years ago with hauntingly beautiful cave paintings at Chauvet, in France. First writing was probably these 9,000 yo neolithic counting tokens.
Then, Johannes Gutenberg ’s revolutionary 15th century printing press launched remote access to other people’s inner worlds through books available to everyone. Without it, life as we know it wouldn’t exist. Thanks JG!
